The Burnet High School girls soccer team defeated Lago Vista 4-3 Jan. 28 in District 25-4A play.

The Lady Dawgs (8-4, 2-1) never trailed thanks to two goals and two assists from Brook Oliva, a goal from Yessi Flores with an assist from Bella Medina and a goal by Valeria Lemus to build a 4-1 lead by halftime.

Oliva’s goals came from through balls where she outran the competition and went one on one with the goalie and scored.

Oliva’s corner kick found Lemus, who put the ball in the back of the net. Flores scored from eight yards as she “just slipped it past the goalkeeper.”

Head coach Doug Ketcham noted Oliva’s presence in the lineup does plenty for her teammates.

“It makes a big difference,” he said. “Not just that we have a player of her caliber. But I think the mental portion that it does for the other girls seeing her back on the field makes a difference in them as well. She’s a fantastic talent. I think it also gives the other girls a feeling of comfort because they feel like ‘hey, we can score and we can score with a lot of people and against a lot of people.’ She’s a difference maker for sure.”

He summed up the second half.

“We just did not play well,” he said. “We didn’t do what we did in the first half. We didn’t press like we should have. They had way too much space.”

He also noted that the Lady Dawgs hadn’t been on the field since they lost to Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch Jan. 22 because of the bad weather.

“It looked to me like we got tired to be honest with you,” he said. “And our tracking data shows that, so I think that probably is a result of the layoff, just having five days where we didn’t do anything because we didn’t have any practices. We practiced right before we left to get on the bus. That was our only practice. And obviously we didn’t do much running.”

Still Ketcham remained encouraged and believes that first half is who these Lady Dawgs are.

“If we can compete like we did in the first half, then we should be able to come out on top,” he said. “Nothing against the other teams, I just I feel like we’re good. We’re really good when we play like we did in the first half.”

Burnet welcomes Florence Friday, Jan. 30, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the verity at 6:30 p.m. then travels to play Austin Eastside Memorial in a varsity-only match at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at Nelson Field.
